The U.S. Coast Guard says that a bulk carrier struck Pier 1 at the Port of Astoria in Oregon early last Friday morning, resulting in a 1,100 gallon diesel spill in the Columbia River, local media reports.

The bulker, a Panamanian-flagged vessel known as Global Gold, is said to have struck the pier shortly before 1 a.m., sustaining a 4-foot gash in the port side hull above the waterline as a result of the collision.

The coast guard's Incident Management Division investigators are reported to have been sent to the scene, where Petty Officer 3rd Class Amanda Norcross said responders determined that a maximum of 1,100 glallons had spilled.

The ship is reported to have been surrounded by a containment boom, and Clean Rivers Cooperative, Inc. from Portland has been contracted to clean the spill.

A reason for the collision has not yet been confirmed.

In August, The U.S. Coast Guard reported that a tugboat collided with the International-Matex Tank Terminal (IMTT) pier in New Jersey, resulting in an oil spill into nearby waters.
