Vancouver terminal operator GCT Container Terminals Inc. (GCT) has joined the Green Marine voluntary environmental program for the maritime industry.

GCT said that it would enter all four of its terminals into Green Marine's environmental certification program, which encourages its participants to go beyond regulatory minimums in terms of sustainable development.

Two of GCT's ports are located in Vancouver, while the remaining two are located in New York and New Jersey

“Joining Green Marine aligns with our company’s strategic priority to grow our business responsibly,” said Stephen Edwards, President and CEO of GCT.

“Taking part in this program is our commitment not to simply implement new procedures within our own facilities, but to share best practices.”

Green Marine said that its program, which is North American-based, has had a successful 6-year track record of inspiring environmental improvements among its participants.

Green Marine Executive Director David Bolduc said that the program was especially helpful to companies like GCT, as it prompts companies to review current efforts and set concrete goals for the future.

This summer, Green Marine also signed an agreement with the Association of Canadian Port Authorities (ACPA) to reduce the environmental footprint of Canada's maritime industry.
