Alabama-based Atlantic Gulf Bunkering LLC (AGB) Monday unveiled a new Emissions Control Area (ECA)-compliant fuel oil product it plans to offer to the market, Platts reports.

The new fuel will have a viscosity of between 15 and 25 Centistokes (cst) and a sulfur content below the 0.10 percent by weight limit of new ECA rules due to take effect from January 1, 2015.

The new fuel will have a pour point less than minus five degrees Celcius.

AGB said its new product will be offered for supply at U.S. Gulf Coast ports as early as Friday and will be available in Panama at a later, undisclosed date.

The fuel is said to have been released as a cheaper ECA-compliant alternative to marine gasoil (MGO) and diesel, but some in the market are said to be skeptical of widespread uptake of the fuel.

"I just wonder how many vessels will try to maintain the additional tank for the 0.1%, given that supply for that will be spotty at best," commented one trader.

Chemoil last week announced plans to sell ECA-compliant fuel oil blends on the East and Gulf Coasts of the U.S. and diesel on the West Coast.
