GE Power Conversion has announced it will supply Brazilian shipbuilders with bunker saving technology.

GE Power Conversion will provide Dynamic Positioning (DP) and vessel control systems to Starnav Servicos Maritimos Ltda (Starnav) as part of the construction of new Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) in Itajai, Brazil.

GE Power Conversion said it has developed a predictive control algorithm which predicts future motion and thrust demands, reducing the need for lots of small positioning adjustments and thus fuel consumption.

In addition, GE Power Conversion will supply its fuel monitoring, recording and advisory system which it says enables ship operators to better manage operational effectiveness.

"As the industry faces ever more stringent cost competiveness, vessels need to perform efficiently with optimized fuel consumption and reduced environmental footprint," said Carlos Eduardo Pereira, General Director at Starnav.

"GE's Power Conversion business excels in offering such technologies that meet both requirements.

"GE's technology also helps to enhance the overall competitiveness when we are seeking prized charters from major operators such as Petrobras thanks to additional factors such as reliability."

The first of Starnav's new generation PSV4500 vessels will enter operation on behalf of Petrobras in 2015.

Petrobras recently said it was not ready to invest in increasing production of low-sulfur fuel oil.
