Bunkering delays along the U.S. East Coast are expected this week as ports close in preparation for approaching severe snowstorms, Platts reports

"This could be the biggest snowstorm in the history of this city," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio was quoted as saying.

Ports such as New York and Philadelphia are predicted to close Monday following blizzard warnings of hurricane-strength winds and 30 inches of snow.

"They won't operate barges in blizzard conditions - no visibility, high winds - it's way too dangerous," said a trader.

The warning was issued in New York, Massachusetts, and areas of seven other states.

Rhode Island-based shipping agent Moran Shipping Agencies said New York Harbor terminals will be closed all of Tuesday, with a decision for Wednesday to be made by Tuesday at noon.

"New York harbor is going to be closed - pretty much anything north of Charleston is going to be closed," a supplier noted.

"The last time we had that was [Hurricane] Sandy."

Traders said the barging delays were expected to keep local bunker markets firm throughout the storm.

Last week the Port of Houston also reported closures due to weather, leading to a temporary tightness in supply.
