U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Wednesday said the USCG Sector Boston was monitoring a fuel oil leak from the sunken ferry Peter Stuyvasent in Boston Harbor.

The boilers of the sunken vessel are said to have contained about 120 gallons of Number 6 fuel oil, and are reported to have been leaking on February 14, 2017.

The vessel's last boiler is said to have been removed on March 28, with no new discharges having occurred since that time.

Contractors cleaning up the spill are said to have recovered about 2,000 gallons of the oily waste.

The vessel sank in 1978 at South Boston's Pier 4.

"The ferry is being excavated as a part of a major redevelopment project at Pier 4. The construction crews were under the impression the vessel was free of pollutants, but immediately called the Coast Guard when one of the boilers started leaking, " explained USCG.
