Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K Line) has announced that the ports of both Long Beach and Los Angeles have recognised the company for maintaining a high level of compliance across its containerships, car carriers, and dry bulk carriers with a voluntary speed reduction programme during the 2015 year.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, the Port of Long Beach says its Green Flag Program, which offers financial rewards for reducing vessel speed near the harbour to decrease emissions, has enabled shipping lines calling at the port to cut thousands of tonnes of air pollution during 2015.

"As a result of this year's achievement, K Line has been honored to receive this award from the Port of Long Beach for eleven consecutive years since 2005 and from the Port of Los Angeles for eight consecutive years since 2008 when their awards were commenced respectively," said the company.

"Especially, as to the Long Beach program, there were only two carriers including K Line which both recorded more than two hundred calls at the port and more than 90 percent compliance rate."

In March, Alphaliner said that low bunker prices had prompted container ship operators to increase average sailing speeds.
