Port Metro Vancouver has announced that it has changed its "Eco-Action" incentives program for ships in light of the upcoming change to Emission Control Area (ECA) sulfur limits.

Effective 2015, keeping with 0.10 percent sulfur limits in marine fuel will no longer make ships eligible for reduced harbour rates.

Required scores under environmental designation programs such as Rightship and Green Marine will also be higher than before.

Beginning next year, the maximum permitted sulfur limit for marine fuel used in ECAs will drop to 0.10 percent by weight from the current 1.0 percent.

The Vancouver port is also one of two Canadian ports, along with the Prince Rupert Port Authority, that offers a rate reduction for the environmentally-friendliness of ships.

The port had previously been applauded by billionaire Richard Branson for its incentives program.
