Germany-based HAMMONIA Reederei GmbH & Co. KG (Hammonia) has completed the conversion of its vessel MV Sealand Los Angeles to utilise alternative marine power (AMP), having commissioned the associated installation at the U.S. Port of Hueneme, World Maritime News reports.

"After first commissioning in Port Hueneme, the vessel could go online directly after berthing during her call to port of Los Angeles on January 17, 2017," said the company.

The AMP container, modification of main switch board (MSB), and related cabling are noted to have been installed in less than 4 weeks - all while the vessel remained in full operation.

Hammonia says Sealand Los Angeles is noted to be the first of four ships chartered by Maersk Group's SeaLand slated to be converted to use AMP in early 2017.

In May, the Port of Hueneme officially opened Phase II of its Grid-Connected Shore Power System, which enables three ships to simultaneously access shore power at the port.

As Ship & Bunker has reported, as of January 1, 2017, vessels have been required to use shore power and reduce emissions by 70 percent while at berth at a California port - an increase from the previous required reduction of 50 percent.
