Singapore has the toughest competition of any bunker market in the world, Morten Tranberg Mortensen, Dan-Bunkering's new head of operations for Asia, told industry news site ShippingWatch.

Mortensen said Dan-Bunkering's strategy in Asia involves closer partnerships with customers through long-term contracts and bunker management deals, in which the supplier handles all bunker purchases for a carrier.

"We want more customers to leave their entire bunker business with us," he said.

"They just give us their sailing plan and we make sure that the entire operation has the lowest cost possible.

"We want to provide customers with financially advantageous solutions, where we not only ensure savings on the bunker price but also in terms of operations, so we can save the customers time as well as distance."

Dan-Bunkering says it is aready one of the ten largest bunker firms in Asia, and it plans to add new offices through organic growth, and possibly also acquisitions.

Mortensen said the company is happy with Singapore's new requirement that all bunkers be measured with mass flow meters by the start of 2017.

"We're keeping a close eye on developments, so that we can offer our customers the best service," he said.

Mortensen was promoted to his current position effective August 1 as part of the company's restructuring of its Asia operations to seek more opportunities in the region.
