Norwegian paint and coatings manufacturer Jotun Group (Jotun) today announced that PETRONAS (Petronas) has enlisted its services to help them "substantially cut fuel costs" on two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers chartered from MISC Berhad, Seri Amanah and Puteri Zamrud.

By using Jotun's Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) antifouling system, Petronas hopes to make an associated 10 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions.

"As a responsible energy company, we are committed to meeting the world's energy needs in a sustainable way and minimising our impact on the environment," said Ahmad Adly Alias, Vice President of LNG Marketing & Trading of PETRONAS.

"By choosing the right antifouling coating, we can enhance the efficiency of our vessels, helping us in our continual effort to reduce fuel cost and the carbon footprint of our operations worldwide."

Highlighting the potential efficacy of its HPS solution, Morten Sten Johansen, Jotun's Regional Sales Director HPS, pointed to its announcement last month that it enabled a Gearbulk Ltd (Gearbulk) owned Supramax bulker to achieve a "staggering" $1.5 million in bunker cost savings over a 5 year period.

"Major industry players like PETRONAS represent a growing cluster of environmentally responsible operators who recognise the value and benefits of advanced antifouling coatings," he added.

"They, like us, are focused on contributing to a more efficient and sustainable industry. Improving hull coatings and performance is a fundamental part of that push."

Earlier this month, Ship & Bunker reported that Geir Axel Oftedahl, Business Development Director of Hull Performance Solutions of Jotun had said that the growing adoption of hull and propeller performance monitoring is encouraging, but "more needs to be done."
