The recent explosion of the tanker MT Aces at Pakistan's Gadani shipbreaking yard has been linked to 375,000 gallons of fuel and 425,000 gallons of lubricants, which is believed to have been subject to smuggling, local media reports.

According to a report by Pakistan's ministry for shipping and ports, sparks from cutting tools caused the ignition of the bunkers and lubricant onboard the vessel, which led to the November 1 explosion that killed more than two dozen people.

The shipbreaking contractor is said to have failed to obtain customs clearance prior to beaching the vessel.

Pakistani authorities are reported to have acknowledged that beached vessels provide an opportunity for fuel and lubricants to be smuggled into the country.

The ministry's report is noted to call for an investigation into the country's current customs practices.
