The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Wednesday announced that it won the title of "Best Seaport in Asia" for the 28th consecutive year at the 2016 Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain Awards (AFLAS), which were held in Shanghai on June 14, 2016.

Port of Singapore is said to have won the award based on its performance across a range of areas, including cost competitiveness, container shipping-friendly fee regime, suitable containing shipping-related infrastructure, investment in new infrastructure for future demand, and the facilitation of ancillary services.

"We are humbled and honoured by this Award. Despite a challenging operating environment, we were able to retain our position as the world’s busiest container transhipment hub in 2015," said Andrew Tan, MPA's CEO.

"That said, we are not resting on our laurels. MPA will continue to work closely with industry stakeholders to plan ahead and implement measures to keep our current standing."

AFLAS, which are selected through votes cast by readers of Asia Cargo News, are intended to honour organisations for "demonstrating leadership and consistency in service quality, innovation, customer relationship management and reliability," said MPA.

Singapore's PSA International Pte Ltd (PSA International) is also said to have won the award for "Best Global Container Terminal Operating Company," while PSA Singapore Terminals won for "Best Container Terminal – Asia (Over 4 million TEUs)."

In April, Ship & Bunker reported that Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2016 was officially opened with an address by Khaw Boon Wan, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Transport, that stressed the importance of working together to overcome current market challenges.

In May, MPA Friday announced that construction had begun on Singapore's Tuas Terminal Phase 1 project, noting that the completed project will help bunker suppliers and other service providers at the port increase efficiency.
