Classification society Korean Register (KR) will work together with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Secretariat (APEC) to promote the adoption and usage of liquefied natural gas (LNG)-capable ships in the APEC region.

Korean Register, which is an International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) member, was awarded a contract by APEC to research the current state of LNG and possibilities in the future.

The society will also conduct a program to share knowledge and best practices across the APEC region.

"We are proud to be internationally recognized as a technical consultancy qualified to deliver high quality research and expertise on LNG-fueled ships to the APEC community," said Kim Chang-wook, acting chairman and CEO of KR.

I am confident that this project will raise our collective knowledge on the potential for LNG fueled vessels and help create a practical environment for the application of this innovative technology for eco-friendly transport solutions."

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.

KR also signed an agreement early this year with the Busan Port Authority to develop environmental initiatives such as eco-friendly ships.
