The Singapore Police Force Tuesday announced that four men were arrested for fraudulent possession of marine gas oil (MGO), local media reports.

The Police Coast Guard is said to have taken the men into custody on Monday after an inspection of their tugboat revealed some 25 metric tonnes of MGO hidden in the vessel's buoyancy chambers.

The search is said to have been conducted while the tugboat was off northern Tuas at around 4 p.m. on Monday, and was subsequently seized by authorities for investigation.

Four men will be officially charged in court on July 20, and could be either fined or jailed for up to one year or both if convicted, according to reports.

Commenting on the situation, Hsu Sin Yun, Police Coast Guard Commander, stressed that the illegal transaction of MGO is a serious offence and strict action will be taken against offenders.
