The RM1.8 billion ($450 million) Samalaju deepsea port in Malaysia's Bintulu's Samalaju Industrial Park (SIP) will be fully ready for operation in nine months, Malaysian media reports.

"We have fixed April 1 next year as the date for the full commissioning of the new port," said Datuk Mior Ahmad Baiti Mior Lub Ahmad, CEO of Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd (BPHB).

BPHB's subsidiary, Samalaju Industrial Port Sdn Bhd (SIPSB), has been running the interim facilities at the port since April 2014.

Mior Ahmad says the project has been delayed by some lagging construction work, leading BPHB to implement a "catch-up" plan to speed up work and ensure the project is completed on-time.

The port is reported to have handled 4.11 million tonnes of dry bulk cargo in 2015, up from 3.39 million tonnes in 2014.

As Ship & Bunker reported in 2014, officials had initially expected that the Samalaju Industrial Port would be fully completed in 2016.
