Rolls-Royce says it has received a Chinese patent for its Environship wave-piercing bow design, which is also patented in Europe and Russia.

The design, intended for merchant vessels and capable of adaptation for different ships, allows the hull to pierce through waves rather than riding over them and contours the shape of waves along the ship's side to reduce resistance.

"We are pleased to receive this patent because it represents a benchmark for quality and legal protection," said Per Egil Vedlog, design manager at Rolls-Royce.

"This patented technology will be highly relevant for ship owners looking to improve the efficiency of cargo ships operating along coastlines and inland waterways where it is most important to reduce fuel consumption and emissions."

Rolls-Royce announced the delivery of its first Environship-designed vessel, the liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered Eidsvaag Pioner, last year.
