India's Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), alongside news that work is underway on the Port of Mumbai's new bunkering facility, says there is a "huge potential for bunkering" at the port area.

MbPT says it expects bunkering business will grow from 200,000 tonnes to 1.925 million tonnes by 2034.

The port trust says that the Mumbai Port's second oil berth at Jawahar Dweep is currently being modified to facilitate the berthing of bunkering barges, while Jawahar Dweep's tanks will be refurbished to enhance storage - a project that is estimated to cost a total of Rs. 50 crores ($7.5 million).

"The bunkering facilities in Mumbai Port will come under single window and the bunker fuel shall be supplied by different oil companies," explained MbPT.

"The facility will bring additional business potential in the form of services such as bunker supply barge operations, maintenance and repairs etc."

In September, Ship & Bunker reported that a Mumbai Port Trust official had said Outer Port Limits (OPL) bunkering at Mumbai was expected to resume by the end of October or early November, likely continuing until the start of monsoon season around the middle of May 2017.
