Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Imabari) Tuesday announced it has installed an exhaust gas scrubber onto its 84,000 DWT bulk carrier M/V Nadeshiko in order to meet sulfur emission control area (ECA) requirements.

The scrubber is said to have been installed on the vessel in support of a joint research project with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (Class NK), intended to analyse a Main Engine Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) installation on an operating newbuilding vessel in a closed loop practicing test.

The vessel will be used to collect data for system verification, as well as maintenance and operation information, says Imabari.

The scrubber, which was manufactured by Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (Fuji Electric), is said to have an adoptable cyclone system, allowing it to be installed without changing the dimensions of superstructure thanks to its compact size.

"We, Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., are positively involved in developing such environmental measures, and will push forward to safer and environment-friendly shipbuilding," said the company.

In January, Ship & Bunker reported that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Counties (OPEC) argued in its latest World Oil Outlook, that there is currently little incentive for ship owners to invest in scrubbers prior to 2020.
