Shanghai plans to enforce new fuel standards for vessels in a bid to reduce air pollution, local media reports.

The report notes that the new fuel standard is yet to be determined but Zhang Xiaodong, chief of the law department at Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, was quoted as saying that  "the local maritime fuel standard will be stricter than the national one."

The move is part of anti-pollution regulations that will come into force next week, although the new fuel regulation will come in at a later date.

Ship captains and vessel owners that violate these standards will be fined by the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration between 10,000 yuan ($1,613) and 100,000 yuan ($16,130), according to the report.

It is understood that under the new regulations vessels will also be required to use shore power while at berth.

Last year Ship & Bunker reported that Shanghai is expected to implement shore power technology in 2015.
