Russian officials have seized 12 tonnes of undeclared bunker fuel aboard a Malta-registered bulker, reports PortNews.

The Kapitan Chekha, which is owned by the Malta's Bonito Shipping Company Ltd., had been enroute to Samsun in northern Turkey when it was stopped by customs in Azov in southeastern Russia.

Rostov Customs said that the vessel had been carrying undeclared goods and that during an inspection, found a full tank of bunker fuel disguised as an empty one.

A criminal case has been opened against the shipowners.

In September, an official with Indonesia's Pertamina was also arrested on charges of fuel smuggling.
