Gulf Petrol Supplies L.L.C (GPS Bunkers) this week has become the first physical supplier in the Middle East to use a mass flow meter (MFM) for bunker deliveries, the company has confirmed to Ship & Bunker.

"This will bring fair competition among all suppliers if used by all. The market will be more transparent," CEO Mr Basheer Ahmed said today.

MFM bunker deliveries are now being offered by GPS Bunkers in Fujairah and KhorFakkan.

As Ship & Bunker previously reported, the supplier announced its plans for MFM bunkering last November, saying at the time it was "expecting a favourable response from ship owners and buyers."

The Endress+Hauser MFM, which has been fitted to its 6,456 dwt barge FNSA 10, gained certification from NMi Certin last week.

GPS Bunkers says it is now also looking to add MFM technology to a second barge, FNSA 11.

Mr Ahmed says that work is expected to be undertaken next year when the vessel goes into dry dock.

As has been previously discussed on Ship & Bunker, the key benefits of using MFM technology for bunkering are accurate and independent verification of the quantity of bunkers delivered, and savings of up to three hours per delivery.

From January 1, 2017 Singapore is set to become the first port in the world to mandate the use of MFMs for bunkering.
