NorYards Fosen AS (NorYards) has announced it has won a NOK700 million ($85 million) contract to build an eco-friendly inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) vessel for use by the BOA Offshore group (BOA).

According to NorYards, the new vessel will be one of the most energy-efficient vessels in its class, incorporating a number of features aimed at achieving optimal operating performance, lowering emissions, and reducing fuel consumption.

The vessel will be designed jointly by NorYards and BOA, while NorYards will be responsible for the engineering, construction, and outfitting of the vessel.

"An IMR vessel has to handle a wide range of operations under challenging conditions," said BOA CEO Helge Kvalvik.

"We have set demanding requirements for this vessel's performance and capabilities with a clear focus on quality, cost-efficiency, operational precision and safety.

"The outcome is a vessel that not only meets the highest operational and safety standards, but we also have achieved to find solutions in co-operation with NorYards with a design that we expect will contribute to a greener and more sustainable shipping.

"By assigning NorYards we are confident that this complex project is in good hands."

The new vessel is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2017.

The contract marks Noryards' third consecutive win from BOA, following the building of BOA Bison which launched last year, and the BOA Jarl which is still under construction.

In January, DNV GL said it had signed up to the Green Coastal Shipping programme which aims to make Norway's costal fleet "the greenest" in the world in collaboration with shipping players and the Norwegian Government.
