Gulf Agency Company Ltd. (GAC) issued a statement Wednesday calling for ships entering DP World and PCFC ports in Dubai to "strictly comply" with PCFC-EHS Ports and Maritime Regulations and IMO Marpol Annex VI regulations.

The statement advises ships to avoid emitting black or grey exhaust smoke, incinerating during port stays, and using fuel oil that does not comply with Marpol Annex VI requirements.

"Any contravention to these above mentioned requirements may result in appropriate sanctions being imposed which may include imposition of fines," GAC says.

The statement also calls for companies to maintain engines and other equipment in good operating condition and ensure that ships' IAPP certificates are "valid in all aspects."

Earlier this year, researchers called for more attention to pollution issues in Dubai, according to Abu Dhabi-based newspaper the National.
