Canary Islands Port Given Grant to Study LNG Bunkering
The Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the largest of the Canary Islands has been granted €400,000 ($498,000) from the European Union to investigate the possibilities of establishing the port as a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering hub, reports TheLoadStar.
The goal is to turn the port into a trans-African shipment hub, according to port commercial director Airam Diaz Pastor, who also added that Tenerife could "more than match" competitor hubs in reliability and productivity.
Pastor said that the hope is to capitalize upon the bevy of LNG-ready ships currently under construction, who will require a reliable LNG network in the future.
Converting to LNG for industrial use will also purportedly save the port €235 million ($292.3 million) per year.
Current plans will also see the construction of a deepsea transhipment box terminal for West African cargo.
Ghana's Port of Tema is also planning a $1.5 billion expansion which will make it the largest port in West Africa.
