INTERCARGO Thursday issued a statement of support for International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Kitack Lim, who Monday urged European Union (EU) officials against including shipping emissions in an Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

"INTERCARGO expresses its full support and total alignment with IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim's concerns that including shipping in the European Union's Emission Trading System (EU-ETS) could undermine efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships on a global basis," said INTERCARGO.

The organisation highlighted its belief that shipping is an international activity, and IMO the appropriate body to address the industry's challenges.

"While the agreement of the European Parliament's Committee still needs approval at European higher level, it is disappointing to see, in the face of global and demanding challenges, the demonstration of regional and insufficient thinking," stated INTERCARGO.

INTERCARGO notes that it works to remind, whenever possible, that IMO has been the first to address GHG emissions through its adoption of technical and operational requirements for new and existing vessels as early as 2013.

Earlier this week, the Clean Shipping Coalition (CSC) said Lim, by issuing his call against the inclusion of shipping emissions in EU's ETS, aligned himself with shipping's "climate laggards."
