EDF Tuesday announced that the Dunkirk liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, which is being used to import, store, and regasify LNG before delivery, commenced commercial operations on January 1.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, the facility will also serve as a LNG bunkering station.

"Due to its industrial design, the regasification terminal provides its customers with safe, flexible and extremely reliable services," explained EDF.

"Its siting in Dunkirk is the ideal position at the crossroads of the seaways between the Channel and the North Sea close to natural gas consumption markets in France and North-Western Europe."

The Dunkirk regasification terminal is noted to be the second largest facility of its kind within mainland Europe, and is directly connected to France and Belgium consumption markets, with an annual regasification capacity of 13 billion m3.

"I am delighted that commercial operations have started up at the Dunkirk regasification terminal, thus creating a new point of gas importation in France and strengthening security of supply in Europe," said Marc Benayoun, Executive Director of the EDF Group, who is in charge of the Gas Sector and Italy for the company.

"It also contributes to the development of the gas supply market, on which the Group already operates with its Italian subsidiary, Edison, and wishes to further strengthen its share."

In May 2014, the Port of Dunkirk said it was seeking builders for a LNG bunkering station, later announcing that it would partner with fellow French companies Dunkerque LNG and Air Liquide, along with Belgian company Exmar in building and operating the bunkering station.
