Dutch shipowner Royal Wagenborg will install two Wärtsilä hybrid scrubber systems aboard two of its RoRo carriers, Wärtsilä Corporation announced Monday.

The systems will be installed on the Balticborg and Bothniaborg, both of which have 1A super Ice Class classification and are designed to operate in temperatures of up to minus 25°C.

The two ships are currently signed to a long term freight contract with Ireland-headquartered Smurfit Kappa carrying paper products across the Baltic and North Seas

"Wärtsilä's experience in scrubber systems for marine applications is unmatched and our reference list is extensive," said Juha Kytölä, vice-president of environmental solutions at Wärtsilä Ship Power.

"We have worked closely with Royal Wagenborg for many years, and have clearly demonstrated our capability to deliver a reliable technical solution that will enable these vessels to comply with the most stringent environmental legislation."

The scrubbers can operate as both closed loop and open loop systems, and were also designed to be able to withstand the colder climate.

They are expected to be installed in fall 2015.

Earlier this year, Wärtsilä and Clean Marine Energy also teamed up to launch a financing program that aimed to provide incentive for shipowners to retrofit ships with scrubber systems.
