Kuwait's Shuaiba oil refinery Saturday restarted operations after it was closed last Monday following a fire at the facility's heavy oil cracking unit, Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) said in a tweet on its official Twitter account.

"By the grace of God and the efforts of the workers the Shuaiba refinery has been restarted at a capacity of 120,000 barrels per day with all the units operating expect those affected," Mohammad al-Mutairi, chief executive of KNPC, said in a tweet, with a later tweet on Sunday saying output has been increased to 140,000 bpd.

The refinery produces fuel oil and marine diesel among other products, according to KNPC, who says it expects no market impact as a result of the incident.

"We have a big storage... any reduction in production will be compensated for from the storage and the other refineries," KNPC was quoted as saying in an earlier report.

"Even during the (fire) accident, export operations were not affected."

Kuwait has three refineries with a combined capacity of 930,000 barrels per day (bpd), including Shuaiba, which at full capacity accounts for 200,000 bpd.

Last week, it was reported that it was unclear when Shuaiba oil refinery in southern Kuwait would resume operations.
