The International Petroleum Investment Company's (IPIC's) effort to construct a 200,000-barrels per day (bpd) refinery in Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman has faced set backs and is now expected to be completed by the end of 2018, instead of 2016 as initially planned, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The refinery, which has reportedly been planned for Fujairah since 2013, is intended to produce middle distillates, says IPIC.

The company notes the product from the refinery will be "primarily for the Northern Emirates of the U.A.E., for export and for bunker fuel to meet strong demand in the Emirate of Fujairah, which is a major regional hub for bunkering and the second largest bunkering port in the world after Singapore."

In June 2014, it was reported that a refinery terminal at Fujairah is planned to include 19 above-ground tanks as well as a 7,500 barrels bpd modular refinery.
