The liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Spain's port of Bilbao has been converted to offer LNG reloading, helping the nation move toward the goal of becoming an international hub for the fuel, chemical and energy industry news site ICIS reports.

"The port of Bilbao is now ready to load [LNG] vessels," a port authority spokeswoman said earlier this week.

The company, Bahia de Bizkaia Gas (BBG), has been able to do reloads for a couple of months now.

The spokeswoman said the port is now moving to allow LNG bunkering, either from other vessels or from the dockside.

"Some companies wishing to supply gas on a commercial basis, whether by land or by sea, also need port authority authorisation to do so," she added.

"We have already prepared the paperwork for when they request it."

All six Spanish LNG terminals now offer reloading, allowing for more flexibility in the supply of the fuel.

European authorities have been pushing for LNG bunkering facilities at the continent's major ports and have provided funding for some of them.
