Gazpromneft bunker tanker, Gazpromneft East, ran aground in St Petersburg's Petrovskiy Canal with 1,200 tonnes of fuel on board, although no resulting pollution has been reported, Maritime Herald reported Friday.

Although the exact timing of the incident was not specified, the vessel is said to have left the fairway while transiting the canal following a blackout, grounding on a sandbank between buoys 9-10 and 11-23.

The incident is noted to have been reported to local authorities, at which point two tugs were dispatched to refloat the vessel.

While Gazpromneft East is noted to have sustained no underwater damages or water ingress, the tanker has been towed to Kanonersky Ship Repairing Yard (KSRY) for underwater surveys and repairs.

Local authorities are said to be currently investigating the cause of the incident.

In June, Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Use of Natural Resources (Rosprirodnadzor) said it responded to a bunker spill at the Port of Vladivostok.
