France-based Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT), which specialises in membrane containment systems for liquefied natural gas (LNG) containers and storage, says it has had its new bunker vessel design approved by testing and certification society Bureau Veritas.

Bureau Veritas granted an approval in principal (AIP) to GTT's design for a 4,000-cubic-metre capacity LNG bunker ship, which has the capacity to hold up to 1,000 cubic metres of marine diesel oil.

In addition to being equipped with GTT's containment system, the company said that the ship is also especially compact, making it well-suited to handle narrow or busy channels and ports.

"This is a new step for us, recognizing the work done by our team of engineers and designers over a long period", said Philippe Berterottière, Chairman and CEO of GTT.

GTT has also received AIPs from Bureau Veritas for several other ship designs, including a 2,200-cubic-metre bunker barge and a bunker mast.

The company said that it has been "progressive" in the adoption of LNG fuel in the industry as it expands to "developing solutions along the whole supply chain."

GTT announced earlier this year that it had received its first bunkering orders in the first quarter of 2014.
