Bureau Veritas has been selected to class a "unique" liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel that it says will help bring forward the use of the fuel in North European waters.

"Our experience with every type and size of gas carrier, our lead in the area of dual-fuel and multi-function gas carriers, and our ability to support the partners means we can make a real contribution to this initiative," said Philippe Donche-Gay, Executive Vice-President and Head of the Marine and Offshore Division of Bureau Veritas.

"It will help kick-start LNG bunkering, bringing forward the use of this clean fuel in North European waters," Donche-Gay continued.

The society said that the LNG bunker barge, which will have dual-fuel diesel electric propulsion, will be built and equipped to the highest environmental standards.

The vessel will be built at Hanjin Heavy Industries under an agreement between Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) Line, Mitsubishi, and GDF-SUEZ.

Delivery of the vessel is set for 2016, where Bureau Veritas said it will initially supply LNG fuel from GDF-SUEZ to the fleet of United European Car Carriers.

In July, Bureau Veritas published new LNG bunkering guidelines.
