The European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA) says it facilitated a briefing session in the European Parliament (EP) Wednesday morning on the International Maritime Organization's (IMO's) recently agreed to CO2 "Road Map," urging parliament to utilise current momentum to ensure the plan for the Road Map is carried out and effectively implemented.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, the Road Map is intended to control CO2 emissions from the shipping industry, with initial CO2 reduction commitments to be agreed to by 2018.

"We invite European policy makers and all stakeholders to join industry in seizing the momentum and showing leadership to make the IMO roadmap work," said Patrick Verhoeven, ECSA Secretary General.

"On the other hand, pursuing regional measures such as an EU ETS or climate fund will seriously endanger international progress, in addition to having negative effects on trade and jobs. The EU should also build trust by aligning its MRV Regulation on the monitoring, reporting and verification of CO2 emissions to the global data collection system agreed in IMO."

As Ship & Bunker reported, following news that the 70th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 70) decided to implement a global 0.5 percent cap on sulfur content in marine fuel from 2020, the ECSA issued a call for IMO to ensure a "level playing field" when the new rules come into effect.
