Primagaz A/S (Primagaz) has announced that the Rem Leader became the first vessel to ever be bunkered with liquid natural gas (LNG) at Denmark's Port of Esbjerg.

Primagaz says it was contacted by Uncoil-Supply to deliver the LNG for the bunkering operation two days prior.

"It was an important moment for the Port of Esbjerg, as Primagaz at the behest of Unioil-Supply Saturday bunkered REM Leader, who thus became the first ship ever to receive LNG in the port of Esbjerg," stated Primagaz in the announcement.

"LNG is becoming an increasingly important source of energy for the maritime industry.

"Towards 2020, 1,000 new ships with LNG engines are expected to be built, while more than 700 existing ships expected to be converted," the company added.

The LNG is reported to have been delivered on three trailers from Rotterdam's Dutch Gate terminal.

"Since 2012, we have participated in a number of projects that promote the development of the infrastructure which will support the increased use of LNG in shipping," said Jesper Bank, commenting for the Port of Esbjerg on the operation.

"Therefore, it is of course satisfactory to know that the first LNG bunkering at the port is now a reality."

In July, Ship & Bunker reported that Denmark's first LNG terminal, which is operated by Fjord Line A/S, had begun operations at the Port of Hirtschals.
