Gazprom Export LLC's Head of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) yesterday said at a conference in St Petersburg that annual consumption of LNG as bunkers in Europe may reach four million tonnes by 2030, Portnews reports.

Predicting the strong rise in demand for LNG as bunkers, Igor Mainitsky alluded to many factors likely to impact the growth.

"The price of LNG and conventional fuels will be the main factor to determine the growth rates of [the] LNG bunkering segment," he said.

In addition Mainitsky pointed to a toughening and expansion of emissions regulations, availability of LNG and related infrastructure, intensity of ship traffic, and the cost of scrubbers and other such technologies as important factors in the development of the LNG bunkering market in Europe.

It was recently reported that European players are looking to bunkering to boost demand for LNG in Europe.
