According to Norwegian Shipowners' Association (NSA) Managing Director Sturla Henriksen, the shipping industry is heading into an "age of uncertainty" as it faces new economic and security-related challenges, IHS Maritime 360 reports

Changes to the economy in China, which is transitioning to a consumer-based culture from an export-based one, are just one of the factors contributing to a more complex global economy, he said.

Henriksen suggests more cooperation between countries would create new opportunities for the industry, especially as the economy and interest rates remain weak.

"Realpolitik is back in vogue and geostrategic thinking dominates again," he said.

He also advocates for free-trade agreements, which is expected to boost economic growth and global trade, both of which are positives for shipping.

"A growing world will need more shipping services," he said.

Early this year, Moore Stephens also warned that the industry was in a "fragile state" heading into 2015, having theorized that some companies could file for bankruptcy.
