Greek maritime media firm NAFS has given KAMINCO USA's liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering technology its award for most innovative product at Posidonia 2014.

KAMINCO offers the system, which produces variable quantities of LNG on demand, in Greece and Cyprus through a partnership with Argentinean firm GNC Galileo.

The system is already being used on ferry company Buquebus's dual-fuel vessel Francisco, which uses seven of the modular refuelling units and can add more as needed.

"The system is a proven technology having been awarded the Black Diamond award 2014 in USA through Buquebus project installation for technological innovation, project implementation, impact on the market and risks involved," NAFS said.

The systems allow companies to install their own terminals, providing sustainable access to fuel even far from standard natural gas infrastructure.

NAFS called for the Greek government to adopt a legal framework to allow for the use of LNG bunkers.

Greek authorities and ship owners have been working with Qatari natural gas players to promote the use of the fuel in Greece.
