Algeria's Secretary General for Energy, Ahmed Messili, Monday said at a seminar in Algiers that the country plans to become an important Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering hub, Bernama reports.

Messili said that emerging LNG bunkering technology is being used by other countries and that growth prospects for Algeria are especially promising given its status as an important LNG producing nation.

Messili's comments came at an Algiers seminar organised by Algerian fuel company Naftal.

Naftal official Samir Houghlaouen added that while current conditions may not be quite right for the expansion of LNG as a marine fuel, the future is promising as the global maritime transport industry is turning its attention to the fuel.

He continued that Algeria's geography is an asset, given the extent of its Mediterranean coastline, saying the country should work towards becoming a leading player in LNG bunkering.

The European Commission this month adopted a new regulatory framework mandating the development of LNG bunkering infrastructure in member states.
