Danish environmental solutions provider Pureteq is switching its focus from land-based markets to marine scrubber systems, industry news site ShippingWatch reports.

"Now we're aiming hardcore for the maritime market, where before we worked broadly with environmental solutions in many different areas," said CEO Anders Skibdal.

"Now we're focusing all our energy at the maritime market while scaling down our land-based projects."

Skibdal said the company is also halting production of ballast water management systems, and its engineers and machinists will focus solely on the marine scrubbers.

Pureteq anticipates big growth in the scrubber market as new rules on sulfur emissions come into effect regionally in 2015 and globally in 2020.

"We do plan to become a multi million dollar business," Skibdal said.

"I can't go into more details than that, but it only takes an infinitesimally small part of the market to become a multi million dollar business by revenue."

The company's revenue now stands at $741,300, but it anticipates reaching the multi-million dollar range in five to six years.

Skibdal noted that as recently as a year ago only 30 to 40 scrubbers had been sold.

"So we've been waiting a bit to see what happens with this market, but now things are starting to take off for real, with some 300 systems sold."

A report from the McIlvaine Company last June called  marine scrubbers a fast-growing market, but commentator Marine Watch warned last month that sales of the systems have "flopped."
