Norwegian ship designer and builder Ulstein last week claimed a milestone for its new fuel saving X-STERN hull line design, which are being mounted on the first vessels from the company for the offshore wind service segment.

Yno 309 and 310, which will be delivered from Ulstein Verft in 2016 and 2017, are also the first to feature the X-STERN design.

"The work progress is steady," says site manager Magnar Kvamme.

"The hull can be expected to arrive at Ulstein Verft in Ulsteinvik, Norway, in the second half of December."

Ulstein says the X-STERN shares several of the same characteristics of its X-BOW inverted bow design, including a reduction in pitch and wave drift forces, leading to reduced power and fuel consumption.

Ulstein Verft signed the shipbuilding contract in Q1 2015 with Germany-based Bernhard Schulte, with the vessels ultimately for its offshore wind projects affiliate WINDEA Offshore GmbH & Co. KG.

Last year Singapore-based offshore marine group Otto Marine Limited (Otto Marine) ordered four fuel efficient platform supply vessels (PSVs) from Ulstein featuring the company's X-BOW hull design.
