Finnish manufacturer The Switch has announced that its marine fuel-saving PM shaft generator has both passed bench tests and been certified by Lloyd's Register

The generator, which uses magnet technology, was designed to reduce the need for installed power aboard the ship, and therefore delivers fuel savings of between 20-30 percent.

"The efficiency performance during testing was an outstanding 97 percent over the entire speed range, even surpassing our expectations," said Mika Koli, business development manager of marine at The Switch.

"This has indeed been worth the effort, because we strongly believe this product will be seen on many ships in the near future."

Two generators have been tested so far, with the pair being part of a larger order of four generators made by Sweden's Wallenius Lines.

The generators will be delivered as part of Finland's WE Tech Solutions' complete system and is installed on a vessel's propeller shaft.

"This is the next big thing in marine," said Mårten Storbacka, managing director of WE Tech.

"Since this technology lowers the need for installed power on a ship, energy generation and weight are reduced significantly, thereby lowering fuel consumption and the need for maintenance."

Another Finnish company, Norespower Oy, has also been developing a fuel-saving system using wind propulsion.
