A failed hose during a bunkering operation last week caused a bunker spill at the Malta Freeport Terminals in Marsaxlokk, Transport Malta announced.

The spill reportedly occurred before Thursday morning, with Transport Malta representatives having shown up early that day to install booms and contain the spill.

It is unknown how much and what kind of fuel was spilled.

"Some heavy oil ended up on board the bunker barge and some drifted into the inner side of the basin where some vessels have been affected," Transport Malta said.

It added that port inspectors were at the scene to monitor the cleanup operation, while shipping traffic at the Freeport Terminals has also been suspended until "until the port is deemed safe for navigation."

Last week, it was reported that another bunker spill from earlier this month in Washington had been much larger than authorities originally though.
