Ports of Stockholm last week announced it will be updating its discounts system for environmentally friendly shippers from 2015.

The port authority said its current system would become outdated due to new sulfur rules that come into force from January 1.

Ports of Stockholm aims to encourage shippers to go beyond legal requirements on environmental measures by offering discounts to those calling Stockholm.

"To motivate and encourage our customers to reduce their environmental impact we are introducing new environmental discounts for onshore power supply in port, for LNG vessels, and for reduced nitrogen oxide emissions," said Ports of Stockholm Deputy Managing Director Henrik Widerståhl.

Ports of Stockholm will offer SEK1 million ($133,000) to shippers that carry out work enabling them to connect to Stockholm's quayside power supply, reducing noise and air pollution at the port.

Port fees for those burning Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkers will be discounted by 5 Öre (Swedish cents) per unit of gross tonnage, while a separate discount for all ships reducing nitrogen oxides emissions will be raised based on the Swedish Maritime Administrations seven-level scale.

Ships using LNG could see their total rebate equal 30 percent of port fees as a result of the measures, said Ports of Stockholm, with those operating daily calls at the port pocketing SEK4 million to SEK5 million ($532,000 to $665,000).

Ports of Stockholm said it "hopes to continue to work together with its customers to remain a step ahead and to make noticeable efforts in achieving sustainable shipping."

Earlier this year, Ports of Stockholm and Tallinn said they would work together to promote LNG bunkers.
