The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Friday announced that Andrew Tan, MPA's CEO, attended the second Port Authorities Roundtable (PAR), hosted at the Port of Rotterdam from June 22 to 24, which covered a number of topics, including ways that the ports can encourage efficient and sustainable shipping.

Tan is said to have spoken on Singapore's Next Generation Port, as well as recent initiatives to increase safe, efficient, sustainable shipping.

The event is said to have been attended by representatives of a number of port authorities, including Ningbo Municipal Port Administration Bureau, Port Klang Authority, and Japan, Bureau of Port and Harbor, Port of Hamburg, Port of Los Angeles, Port of Long Beach, and Port of Guangzhou.

The inaugural PAR event, which was intended to foster closer collaboration among global ports, was organised by MPA during the 10th Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2015 and attended by 10 ports from Europe, Asia, and Oceania region.

"We thank Port of Rotterdam for hosting PAR2016 following the successful run of inaugural PAR in Singapore last year," said Tan.

"Through this platform, port authorities can engage in frank and open dialogue and address issues of common interest in the areas of efficiency, safety and sustainability. Singapore is also pleased to be designated as the secretariat of this new grouping."

In February, MPA announced that it will operate with Japanese classification society ClassNK to research and develop ship safety and environmental sustainability technologies.
