Baleària Eurolínias Marítimas S.A. (Baleària) today announced that it is investing €5.5 million ($5.85 million) to improve the energy efficiency, reliability, and service its high-speed ship Jaume II.

Work to repower the ferry is said to have begun this week Astilleros del Guadalquivir shipyard, and will see the vessel's four main engines replaced with engines that are 10 percent more efficient and reduce NOx emissions by over 70 percent.

Adolfo Utor, Baleària's Chairman, says the project will also increase the reliability and speed of the ship, enabling Jaume II to maintain a cruise speed of 35 knots.

The Jaume II repowering project is part of the company's larger fleet modernisation initiative.

Another one of the company's vessels, Abel Matutes, is noted to have been recently retrofitted with a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank and an auxiliary LNG-powered Rolls-Royce engine - an initiative Baleària says will result in an estimated annual reduction of about 4,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, more than 60 tonnes of NOx, and 6 tonnes of SOx.

Last week, Baleària announced that it had signed a €200 million ($214.92 million) agreement with Cantiere Navale Visentini S.r.l. (Cantiere Navale Visentini) to build two new dual gas engine sister ferries.
