Costa Crociere S.p.A. (Costa Cruises) Tuesday, upon the release of its latest sustainability response, announced that last year it managed to reduce its energy consumption by 4.8 percent year on year and its carbon footprint by 2.3 percent year on year in 2015.

Entitled "Sea You Tomorrow – On course for the future," the report highlights Costa Cruises' main sustainability results during the 2015 year, and sets out the company's strategy for future sustainable growth.

"Costa Cruises is committed first and foremost to minimising the environmental impact of its operations; it does this by means of a series of ship energy efficiency projects aimed at reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, protection of water resources and recycling of waste," stated the company.

Costa Cruises says that it achieved a 3 percent year on year reduction in fuel consumption per passenger per day during the 2015 period.

The company further notes that exhaust gas scrubbers have been installed on seven of the companies vessels - 46.6 percent of the company's fleet - helping to reduce the Costa Cruises' overall SOx emissions by 11 percent, and its NOx and particulate emissions by 3 percent.

As Ship & Bunker reported last year, Costa Cruises is set to receive two of the four "next-generation" liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered cruise ships - noted to be slated for delivery in 2019 and 2021.

"The introduction of newer and more fuel-efficient vessels – constituting a model of excellence – is facilitated by recent improvements in the regulatory framework and in the availability of gas bunkering infrastructure," added the company.

Also last year, Carnival Corporation & plc (Carnival), Costa Cruises' principal, announced that two further new build LNG cruise ships would be going to its German cruise line, AIDA Cruises.
