MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (MAN) says a new vessel propulsion upgrade project with chemical tanker operator Odfjell SE (Odfjell) is capable of delivering fuel oil savings, as well as a reduction in associated emissions, of "well above 20 percent."

MAN explains that the project will see propulsion systems of Odjefell vessels upgraded with the "highly efficient" MAN Alpha Kappel propeller concept, as well as a MAN Alpha rudder bulb and fairing cone concept.

The upgrade project will also see engine power limitation (EPL) and gear ratio of the power take out (PTO) for the shaft generator optimised for the specific operation profile of each vessel.

"In today's tough market situation staying ahead of your competitors is vital in order to run a prosperous and attractive business," said MAN.

"Therefore, Odfjell is in close cooperation with MAN Diesel & Turbo to upgrade the propulsion system on 19 of the vessels in their fleet."

MAN notes that the vessels that have received the energy efficiency upgrades have moved from class D in the Rightship greenhouse gas (GHG) environmental energy rating, to the highest possible rating - class A.

In June, Ship & Bunker reported that Christian Poensgen, senior vice president engineering at MAN said low bunker prices mean that energy efficiency improvements on marine engines need to be delivered at "twice the value for the same price."
