Grimaldi Gleans "Significant" Bunker and CO2 Emissions Savings from Hull Coating

Hempel A/S (Hempel) Tuesday proclaimed that Italy-based Grimaldi Group (Grimaldi) has gleaned "significant" reductions in its bunker bill thanks to reduced consumption and associated emissions resulting from the application of Hempel's Hempaguard X7 and Hempasil X3 silicone hull coatings on more than 30 vessels since 2011.

Hempel explains that Grimaldi first applied Hempasil X3 to the hulls of 16 vessels between 2011 and 2014.

Pleased with the fuel savings resulting from the coating, Hempel says Grimaldi had a further 20 vessels coated - this time with Hempel's Hempaguard X7, which was launched in 2014.

"A best-in-class technology, Hempaguard X7 delivers sustained fuel savings, even if the vessel experiences long idle periods or changes trading patterns," said Hempel.

"As a result, it reduces a vessel's fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by an average 6 percent over the entire docking interval, but in some cases, actual savings can be higher as Grimaldi discovered."

In September, Hempel and DNV GL renewed their declaration of support for ISO 19030 - the new hull and propeller performance criteria - a standard that they say promotes fuel savings within the shipping industry.
